North Shore Archaeology & Sacred Sites Tour Explore the rich archaeological treasures of Oahu’s North Shore while touring its world famous beaches and Waimea Valley Waterfall. Visit the piko (navel) of Oahu on a drive through the center of the island, between Oahu’s two ancient volcanoes and through the modern pineapple fields. Stop to explore one of the most sacred places in all of the Hawaiian Islands – the birthing stones of the ancient chiefesses, full of mana (power) to create sacred ali’i (chiefs).
Then stretch your legs along beautiful Waimea Bay, site of some of the largest waves in the world (winter only), before ascending the foothills of the Ko’olau Volcano to visit the largest remaining war temple on Oahu with impressive views of the North Shore.
Next descend back into Waimea Valley to see the Hale o Lono, temple of peace and agriculture, and stroll back into the beautiful botanical gardens now operated by the Audubon Society. Once the home of Oahu’s high priest, Waimea Valley is rich in archaeological sites, including an ancient chieftain’s village, burial caves, a unique burial edifice and agricultural rock terracing. The valley is also home to rare endemic birds and plants as well as beautiful tropical exotics. The short stroll ends at a cascading waterfall and large swimming hole for those who would like to take a refreshing splash! (Swimming at waterfall is dependent upon stream and weather conditions.)
Optional: Sightseeing visits to other famous North Shore surf spots and tidal pools and a stop for the best shave-ice on the island.
