Ho'olaulima: Community Service Project & Sacred Sites Tour

This eco tour is ideal for those interested in gardening, botany, culture, history, or who just want to do something good for the environment.

Learn about life in ancient Hawaii, the relationship of the people with the land, and how our ancestors were able to survive and prosper by living in balance with their surroundings. Become a part of this ancient practice by spending a morning helping with the restoration of one of Oahu's sacred sites.

Hina Adventures is proud to introduce the Community Service Project & Sacred Sites Tour. Hina believes that there are environmentally conscious people out there who are happy to give a few hours back to Hawaii's community while gaining profound insights into the culture of these lands in the process. This tour was designed with that in mind. Working together with local community groups, Hina Adventures has created the opportunity for visitors to gain in-depth knowledge of and to help maintain two ancient sites on the island, Ulupô heiau and Nâ Pôhaku O Hauwahine, both of which are currently being cared for with the intention of making them both into working cultural sites once more. On this very special eco tour guests will have the opportunity to thoroughly explore these unique, sacred sites while learning about ancient Hawaiian religion, mythology, agriculture, aqua-culture and the rare and endangered native plants being replanted. Guests will also contribute two to three hours working alongside the community to help in the ongoing archaeological and cultural restoration.

The day begins with a stop at the breathtaking Pali Lookout. From there you will get an overview of the section of land that will be the focus for the day while gaining information on how ancient Hawaiian communities worked. The next stop will be the first of two archaeological sites in the Kailua ahupua‘a (land division), where you will get an extensive tour of the site, including the importance of the area in ancient and modern Hawaiian culture, the surrounding flora and fauna, and current efforts for restoration. You then arrive at the second site, where you will again get a comprehensive tour of the area. After a quick snack you'll get your hands dirty, working side by side with local volunteers to help in the ongoing efforts to beautify and restore the site.

You'll enjoy a deli lunch with your work mates before heading off to beautiful Kailua Beach, one of Oahu's finest, for a well-earned dip in the sparkling blue waters. In one day you'll experience Oahu Island from mountain to sea, and know that you've left Hawai‘i more beautiful than when you arrived.
