Overview
Since 1985, Journeys East has been specializing in small group tours to Japan that appeal to the independent traveler looking for a unique cultural experience. Journeys East designs, organizes, and guides all of their own Japan cultural tours to create an intimate style of travel that allows a hands-on experience of Japanese culture. Whether staying in hot springs inns, thatched-roofed farmhouses or elegant ryokan, these trips seek out a deeper appreciation for the Japanese arts, crafts, and architecture and take guests beyond the well-worn paths to secluded corners where you become participants in foreign cultures rather than mere observers.
Cultural Immersion Culture is what fascinates the founders of Journeys East, and their trips have been designed to learn more about those aspects of the culture that intrigue them the most. The Japanese arts and architecture, both traditional and contemporary, and the Shinto and Buddhist philosophies, have inspired them to develop their Japan trips: From Farmhouse to Teahouse, Brushes with Inner Japan, and Asian Havens. All those with an interest in immersing themselves in a foreign culture are invited to join these unique adventures.
On these trips guests travel together as a group of friends would, coming together to experience a culture in a meaningful and personal way. Limiting each trip to 16 participants or less allows Journeys East the flexibility to travel to remote locations where you can stay in tiny country inns, visit artists’ studios, participate in special ceremonies and classes, and connect with the local culture. Journeys East cares very much that each participant has as extraordinary a time as possible and they are willing to go to great lengths to fulfill this commitment. With two leaders on each trip, they provide a high degree of personal attention, expertise, and, most importantly, humor.
Leadership Expertise Journeys East seeks out leaders who not only understand the culture and have a connection and affinity for it, but just as importantly, leaders who have incredible “people” skills. Their leader “teams” make sure not only that all logistics behind the scenes are running perfectly, but that each and every participant is having the best possible time.
The trip leaders — scholars, writers, musicians, folklorists — periodically take time off from their “day” jobs to lead trips for Journeys East. They bring their unique visions and expertise to each trip and traveler. Over the years Journeys East has created a stellar group of leaders who not only are bilingual, well informed about the culture, and experts in fields as diverse as Minka restoration and the textile arts, but leaders who travel the “extra mile” to assure that everyone is having the ultimate Journeys East experience.
